The Land of Enchantment casts a spell even the toughest, most focused mountain biker on the planet couldn't resist. You marvel at the forests of aspen, ancient mine ruins, sleepy towns and ghost towns, cliff dwellings and creek side habitat of oak and sycamore. It is just amazing.
Though the neighboring states of Utah and Colorado often get more attention from mountain bike enthusiasts, New Mexico, with an incredible variety of terrain, sparse crowds, and thousands of miles of trails, may be the country's best off-road locale.
Mountain biking is often lumped into the extreme sports category. In truth, off-road cycling can be as intense, or easy, as you want it to be. If you know how to pedal, you are qualified.
Ruidoso is in a so called 'alpine' mountain biking area, where the breezes are cool, the climbs formidable and lovely, and riders weave along narrow traces through pine forests and expansive meadows.
Bicyclists can enjoy rising through the dunes of White Sands National Monument on Friday and Saturday evenings. Advance registration is required. Bicyclists may enter the park between 9 and 10 pm and be back by midnight.
Be prepared. Ride with a helmet, at least two bottles of water, and the tools to fix a flat tire and a broken chain. Carry a rain jacket. Gloves and padded bike shorts make your ride more comfortable. Make sure your light works for evening and night trips. That's it. Off you go !!
